JAPAN WINTER FAMILY PLAN · 42 DAYS · SOUTH TO NORTH

A more interesting way to look at the Japan trip.

This version turns the recovered itinerary into a proper trip page: a clickable route map, stop-by-stop cards, pacing notes for travelling with kids, and the transport logic that keeps the whole thing sane.

Why this route works

Instead of doing the standard Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka conveyor belt, this trip leans into volcanic Kyushu, underrated Shikoku, old-world San'in, snow-country Tohoku, and a proper Hokkaido winter finish. The result is more onsen towns, more scenery, better food variation, fewer crowds, and a much stronger sense of “actual Japan”.

Hot springs + ryokan
Traditional towns without Kyoto crush
Volcanoes, coasts, mountain valleys
Better winter sequencing
Kid-manageable pacing
Ends with real snow + skiing

Strongest parts of the trip

  1. Aso / Kyushu countryside
  2. Kurokawa Onsen
  3. Iya Valley
  4. Matsue / Izumo
  5. Aizu or Yamagata snow country
  6. Furano ski finish

These are the sections most likely to feel memorable rather than merely famous.

Things deliberately not prioritised

  • Central Kyoto crowd management
  • Osaka unless needed for transit
  • Hakone / standard tourist loop
  • Niseko if the goal is “realer” Japan
  • Overstuffing Tokyo at the end

The whole itinerary gets stronger by being selective.

Transport logic

LegBest methodRealistic timeWhy
Fukuoka → NagasakiTrain~2 hrsEasiest, clean start, no car yet.
Nagasaki → UnzenCar~1.5–2.5 hrsPublic transport gets clunky with kids and bags.
Unzen → AsoCar~4.5–6 hrsOne of the big Kyushu travel days.
Aso → KurokawaCar~1–1.5 hrsBeautiful easy countryside leg.
Kurokawa → BeppuCar~2–2.5 hrsStraightforward winter transfer.
Beppu → MatsuyamaFerry + local transfer~3.5–5 hrsMost sensible jump into Shikoku.
Matsuyama → IyaCar~2.5–4 hrsMountain roads slow the final section.
Iya → KurashikiCar~2.5–3.5 hrsGood decompression stop after the mountains.
Kurashiki → MatsueTrain or car~2.5–4 hrsEither works depending on driving fatigue.
Matsue → AizuInternal flight + onward transfer~6.5–9 hrsOne of the two big route jumps.
Aizu → Zao/YamagataTrain or car~2.5–4 hrsFlexible snow-country segment.
Zao/Yamagata → FuranoInternal flight + transfer~5.5–8 hrsBest way to make the Hokkaido finish work.

Family pacing rules

  • Stay 3–5 nights per base wherever possible.
  • Use a rhythm of 2 active days, 1 easy day, 1 travel/light day.
  • Mix apartment hotels with ryokan so every night is not “formal dinner with children”.
  • Prefer coin laundry / washer access.
  • Save heavier snow logistics for the end.

Accommodation style

  • Apartment hotels in Fukuoka, Matsuyama, Furano
  • Ryokan with family/private bath in Unzen and Kurokawa
  • Pension / cottage in Aso
  • Mountain lodge in Iya Valley
  • Practical local hotels for Kurashiki, Aizu, Yamagata

Best timing within winter

Mid-December: Kyushu

Late December: Shikoku + San'in

Early January: Tohoku

Mid-January: Hokkaido ski finish

This sequencing is one of the smartest parts of the whole plan: milder south first, better snow reliability later.
